| This article used to be a very good article. It was promoted on 4 December 2007 and demoted on 9 March 2008. This means the community feels this article was written very well, but is not now. |
So what kind of theory would you use for your music composing?

Value Judgments and Inaccuracies
This article is full of statements which pigeonhole music into a narrow category that is completely obsolete since the 20th century at the very least, if not categorically.
For instance, "If someone bangs saucepans while cooking, it makes noise. If a person bangs saucepans or pots in a rhythmic way, they are making a simple type of music." is just offensively false. Can something be done to fix this without complicating the issue, thus moving it outside the realm of simple English?
- Reading this long after it was written, I don't see it as obviously false, and it is certainly not offensive. It was an attempt to answer a really difficult question, namely, what distinguishes music from other types of sound? English wiki has a whole article on this one topic. Baroque Period
This section needs to be simplified further; there are a lot of words that are too complex for this wiki.TheBigFish (talk) 16:24, 19 December 2008 (UTC)

This contain is a proven that is music is the understanding easy and is a motivation to investigate more about this theme.
Eptalon's GA review
- More references, esp. in-text ones?
- History of Western classical music; and as a subsection we have Jazz, Pop Music, etc? - I think we should not mix two kinds here. Personally, I don't know, but Benjamin Britten (1913-1976) who was definitely influenced by Jazz is considered Classical. In general I think though that you should perhaps take the most modern (read: probably 20th century) out of this; alternatively if you leave it that way, back it up by a reference.
- Generally link the composers, styles, and musical instruments the first time they appear; but do this consistently.
- Perhaps too much to ask, but can we get two or three composers which were typical for each period of music?
- Music in Ancient Greece, Ancient Rome?
- Can we perhaps get just a short note on people learning to play an instrument/singing,... as a hobby vs. as a professional education
- Different types of music: Chamber music (small quartets/quintets), Music in the family is different from orchestral music, often written to impress an audience. Mentioned Giuseppe Verdi, Schostakovich?
- Music can also help treat certain diseases and conditions; it can help people work in teams (no, the trumpet is not more important...)
Overall , I think before this aricle.
- Perhaps just as pointers: Music for the Royal Fireworks, by Händel; Hector Berlioz, Symphonie Phantastique,... ("Programme music")
To sum it up, what this article needs to be able to get a GA flag:
- Be more precise
- Explain more
- Give a good overview.
"Music" is perhaps a bad example to do this with... --Eptalon (talk) 20:34, 10 September 2009 (UTC)
More changes
- I took and hopefully simplified the Prehistoric music article from EnWP
- The same should be done with the Ancient music article.
Once this is done, what is in this article can be copied into our repsective articles, and summarised here.

the modern period - 12 tone scales
the article contains the following
"but some composers such as Benjamin Britten use it today, when it is necessary to get a certain feel."
Britten has been dead quite a while now, so can a different example of a 12 tone user who is writing music today be provided?

Far too ethnocentric
The huge section on Western classical music is not balanced by any sections on World music, Oriental music &c. Disappointing. Macdonald-ross (talk) 07:54, 23 July 2010 (UTC)
