A better way to add/use images on configurable products with 2 configurations?
If I have a configurable item with 2 options "Color" and "Size". I have 2 ways to add images to the child products
1) Upload images to every child product. Which is incredibly time-consuming.
2) Upload via Configurations > Edit Configurations > Step 3: Bulk Images, Price and Quantity > Apply unique images by attribute to each SKU > Color
The problem with #2, is if I only 1 size and color of an item, it creates all the missing sizes. Also, it seems like it takes a long to 'save' the configurable product.
It also seems like it takes up a LOT of space, but maybe I'm wrong about that?
In addition to this issue, if at a later date, I get a new color, I have to do step #1 for the images of the new products or repeat step #2, including replacing all the old images with a new one - even if I use the same image.
There has to be a more efficient way to add or use images. I've searched high and low, but mainly all I find are tutorials on the process I described above.
Does anyone know of a way to make this process
1) take less time
2) use less disk space
3) not have to replace all items if adding additional items later
4) share the 'Color' image for all child products of that color regardless of size
5) add an "images" property to the Catalog > Products > Update Attributes field
Any of the above would be a major step in a good direction. The current Magento method is cumbersome, redundant, and slow.
Currently using Magento 2.2.9
