Coroner diagnoses pulmonary congestion in report on bobsled legend Steven Holcomb’s untimely death



LAKE PLACID, N.Y. (May 7, 2017)- A preliminary report released by the Adirondack Medical Center in Saranac Lake, N.Y. today announced the diagnosis of pulmonary congestion as a possible cause in the untimely death of U.S. Olympic bobsled legend Steven Holcomb (Park City, Utah). The final cause and manner of Holcomb’s passing remain pending toxicology studies to be performed by an independent laboratory. The report declared that a preliminary screen performed at the center was negative for drugs and there is no suspicion of foul play. Holcomb — a friend, teammate and mentor to athletes and fans around the world — was discovered to have passed away in his sleep at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Lake Placid yesterday.


“Our deepest sympathies go out to the family, friends and teammates of our dear friend Steven Holcomb,” said USA Bobsled & Skeleton Board of Directors Chairman Pete Piechoski. “Steve was a wonderful man, and a great friend. He was a fearless competitor whose light shone bright and guided us all. You will be sorely missed, Steve. God's peace to you on your next journey.”
