Najaf, annajaf — Iroqning jan. qismidagi shahar, Furot daryosining oʻng sohilida. Najaf muhofazasining maʼmuriy markazi. Aholisi 310 ming kishidan ziyod (1990-yillar oʻrtalari). N. — Makka va Madinaga boriladigan yoʻl yoqasidagi savdo-trans-port markazi. Shaharga 8-asr oʻrtalarida asos solingan. 11-asrda devor bilan oʻralgan. N. — shialarning muqaddas shaharlaridan. N.da xalifa Ali masjid-maqbarasi (Abbosiylar davrida qurilgan) bor.[1]
