Alfa Centauri er et stjernesystem bestående av tre stjerner. De to største kretser rundt hverandre med en omløpstid på 80 år.[10] Den siste, Proxima Centauri, en rød dverg, er betydelig mindre, lengre unna og kretser rundt de to andre med en omløpstid på ca. én million år. De to største stjernene benevnes Alfa Centauri A og Alfa Centauri B og oppfattes som én hvit stjerne når den ses med det blotte øye fra jorden. Alfa Centauri er solens nærmeste naboer i Melkeveien, og Proxima Centauri er den nærmeste av de tre.[10]
Da NASA sendte ut sin «signalbøye» om jorden og menneskene, var det dit man siktet. Mange science fiction-forfattere har hatt Proxima Centauri som første stopp på vei ut i verdensrommet.
Alfa Centauri ligger langt sør på den sørlige himmelen og er ikke synlig fra Norge og Europa, men kan såvidt sees fra Kanariøyene.

I bane rundt Alfa Centauri B ble det antatt å være en planet, Alfa Centauri Bb.[12] I 2015 ble den påvist å ikke eksistere.[13] Siden Alfa Centauri-systemet er solens nærmeste nabo, er også Alfa Centauri Bb jordens nærmeste naboplanet utenfor solsystemet. Avstanden mellom Alfa Centauri Bb og Alfa Centauri B er 6 millioner kilometer. Temperaturen er minst 1500 K (1200 °C).
